Who we are

We are Onondaga County’s Department of Water Environment Protection, a public agency responsible for infrastructure and services that support the human, environmental, and economic health of our community. From our Syracuse headquarters, our workforce of roughly 400 employees protects public health and local waterways while serving more than 88,500 properties across the county’s Consolidated Sanitary District.

What we do

We collect and treat more than 33 billion gallons of domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater each year, operating six treatment plants and maintaining approximately 2,100 miles of sewer pipe and more than 170 pump stations. Our responsibilities also include plumbing permits, plan reviews and installation inspections; plumber licensing and registration; industrial wastewater monitoring; flood control; and laboratory testing. Our Plumbing Control team inspects pipework, sewer connections, backflow prevention systems, and grease traps to enforce applicable plumbing codes and protect water supplies.
